Katrin & Hugo
27th July 2019
Katrin and Hugo hold a special spot in my heart as they first emailed me when my wife was hours away from giving birth to our son.
My wife had just had an epidural and was sleeping in what must have been the first moment of calm in the previous 36 hours, and as I, bleary eyed and emotionally drained, drafted my response and hit the reply button I laughed to myself and thought "Are they really going to believe this?"
Fortunately, they did! I was absolutely delighted when they booked me as their photographer, not just because of the above, but because they were genuinely one of the loveliest couples I've had a chance to work with.
Despite the prospect of all day rain, I showed up to Clare College Cambridge (where Katrin and Hugo had met as undergrads) to find a very relaxed Katrin drafting her speech on the bed, surrounded by snacks. The morning didn't really get any more stressful than that as Katrin seamlessly transitioned from relaxed to excited without any visible signs of stress or anxiety - the perfect bride!
I moved across to the chapel to meet Hugo who was equally as relaxed and in the midst of rehearsing with the choir who sounded absolutely exceptional, and before long it was time for the 'I do's'.
After a brief walk through the Fellows Garden, the newlyweds made the short journey back to their campervan, stopping only to receive compliments and well-wishes from passing tourists and exchange students, before heading on to Rectory Farm for the reception to eat, drink and dance the night away.
One last thing to mention - I've been to lots of weddings, both as a guest and a photographer, and at the moment during the first dance where the couple invites their guests to join them on the dance floor, in every case in my experience it's been the same formula - 1 or 2 couples (normally the parents) bravely join them whilst everyone else either skulks off to the bar or nervously watches from the sidelines, wondering whether or not they should join in. It's the British way after all! In this case without hesitation almost everyone immediately got stuck in on the dancefloor - it was brilliant to see, and it didn't stop with the first dance - nearly every guest was up for every Ceilidh dance. It can't be said that Katrin and Hugo's friends and family don't know how to enjoy themselves!
It was a great day - my best wishes to you both for the future!
